The Coarse Pottery Lotus Gaiwan Teapot is made from high-quality pottery clay, handcrafted by skilled artisans. The teapot features a gilded iron glaze, evoking a sense of retro style. Fired at a high temperature of 1300°C using a reduction kiln process, the clay naturally forms the effect of falling ash, giving the surface an intentionally rough texture. The retro glaze color is paired with a mottled finish, combining simplicity and strength with a natural, flexible look.
The lotus cover lid features a relief design, combining beauty and practicality. The spout is designed to turn downward, ensuring smooth water flow. The tureen includes a filter hole, which separates the tea residue from the tea soup, enhancing the flavor. The bottom is smoothly polished to avoid damaging your tabletop, and the lotus leaf base adds a delicate touch to the design. The simple yet refined exterior, combined with pure manual craftsmanship, makes this teapot a striking piece.
The Gaiwan (Mandarin for covered cup, "zhong" or “cha chung" in Cantonese) has been used in China since about 1350. It consists of saucer, bowl, and lid, which are designed to be used together. To brew tea with the Coarse Pottery Lotus Gaiwan Teapot, first place the tea in the bottom of the teapot. Pour in enough boiling water to come just under halfway up the cup and immediately drain off by holding the cup and saucer together and using the lid as a strainer to hold back the leaves. Now uncover the leaves and inhale the aroma from the "rinsed" leaves. Next, pour fresh boiling water into the Gaiwan, not directly onto the leaves but down the inside of the cup to set the leaves swirling at the bottom. You can then drink the tea directly from the teapot or pour it into a fair cup to cool it.
The Coarse Pottery Lotus Gaiwan Teapot is an excellent brewing method for any type of tea, as long as you carefully monitor the water temperature and brewing time. The tea can be brewed and drunk from the same vessel, or alternatively, the Gaiwan can be used as a teapot, with the tea decanted into a small pitcher or individual tasting cups.
