The Japanese Southern Gongfu Cast Iron Teapot traces its origin to water kettles from the Tang and Song Dynasties of China, later spreading to Japan and becoming widely used during the Meiji period. This teapot carries a deep sense of historical continuity and cultural refinement.
Each cast iron teapot is handcrafted by senior artisans, taking more than 20 days to complete—from design, carving, molding, spout shaping, painting, to final finishing. Because of this meticulous handmade process, each teapot is slightly different in color and texture, making every piece unique. The body is carved with auspicious totems such as swastika patterns, combined with subtle Zen aesthetics, adding an ancient and dignified charm.
For first use, it is recommended to boil the teapot with Pu’er tea for 5–6 minutes, then rinse by boiling mineral or tap water 6–7 times until the water runs clear. If Pu’er tea is unavailable, boiling with water 2–3 times for 15–20 minutes each is sufficient. The spout features a carefully designed curve, ensuring smooth water flow—one of the essential qualities of a fine cast iron teapot.
With long-term use, this cast iron teapot gradually releases iron elements that can be absorbed by the body, helping soften water, enhance tea aroma, and improve overall tea quality. It transforms every brewing session into a calm and grounding tea ritual.
