Sphere Yixing Teapots

* Loop handle teapot, Jiajing Period in Ming Dynasty, unearthed in the eunuch Wu Jing's tomb at Majiashan outside of Zhonghua gate in Nanjing. This pot is the earliest purple clay teapot which could define its time in the historical records until now. The shape is a traditional ceramics pot shape, a little wide mouth, wide shoulder, convergent underbelly, flat bottom. A curl flow-mouth set on the belly, four petals of persimmon flowers decoration on the root segment of flow-mouth, there is a loop handle looks like similar to the Ming Dynasty furniture. It also looked like the teapot which painted in the Wang Wen's "boiling tea scroll", but that one was similar to the metal teapot, compare them, maybe this one is also used for boiling water.

* Round teapot, Ming Dynasty, unearthed from the Qiantao Village's ancient well in Dantu Town of Jiangsu Province. The round belly, a little wide mouth, no neck, curl flow-mouth,circle handle with inferior molding technique, and concave roundish feet inside of the bottom. This shape already was pinpointed as the basic style of purple clay teapot which used for infusion of tea.

* Three standing feet Dabin teapot with decorative Ruyi pattern cover, Chongzhen Period in Ming Dynasty, made by Shi Dabin. Unearthed from the Hua Yiyinfs tomb at Ganlu County of Xishan City in Jiangsu Province. This shape is sphere, three curl of the flow-mouthy three small standing feet Convex cover with the button as center, painted the decorative rayi pattern on the cover. There are so many changes based on the neck, espacially the management of the neck to wide the flow-mouth, much more corresponding with the customs of tea-drinking in south of China. We can know the craftswork of purple clay teapot and the managements of surfece of teapot was made sure. This should be the highest level in the late-Ming Dynasty, and continued now.

* Roundish teapot, Shao Daheng who was lived in Jiaqing/Daoguang Period of Qing Dynasty, Yu Guoliang and Cheng Shouzhen in the Republic of China Period, they all made the roundish teapots and all pots were smooth wares, but with different shape. The one made by Shao Daheng war sphere, small mouth, flow-shoulder, pressed cover, seemed like small totally. The one made by Yu Guoliang were pointed nose shape of the cover, a little big bottom, seemed like wider totally. The one made by Cheng Shouzhen was wide mouth, a little high neck, semisphere shape of cover, a little flat shoulder, overall, seemed like the three overlapping spheres, got an intereting characteristic extremely.

Three teapots got their characteristics in detail change, the cover, shoulder, belly were different, so they still were changing totally.

* Lotus feed shape of teapot, Pan Qianrong who lived in Daoguang Period of Qing Dynasty, the total shape was similar to the roundish teapots just a little square of the belly. Wide mouth, little outwards of the top of the handle.

* Imitation of roundish teapot, Shao Daheng who was lived in Jiaqing / Daoguang Period of Qing Dynasty, the total shape was sphere, compressed in proportion with lotus feed shape of teapot, but too many differences.

* A grain of pearl shape of teapot, Daoguang / Tongzhi Period of Qing Dynasty, made by Shao Youting, the sphere belly, the shape was clean and simple extremely, coordinated the mouth, cover, shoulder, button, handle naturally, without any redundant parts. It still had the round pearl pot which was a little higher.

* Grey calabash shape of teapot, Jiang Jianxiang, Modem time. The pot body similar to the sphere, a little distorted, short flow-mouth, pressed cover, the body connected with the handle, it was interesting and vivid with three leaves and fruits.

* Vital force teapot, Liu Jianping, Modem time. The shape is similar to the sphere, the curl vary on the body seems like the flower bud. Seeking the change in the clean and simple modelling.

* Taper teapot, Guangxu Period in Ming Dynasty, made by Yun Shizhi, Nan Wengming. The shape is similar to the sphere, a little compressed, concave cover, the button was decorated by chains, its original intention was imitated the style of big hammer in Qing Dynasty. In the late-Qing Dynasty, this shape was meaningful. The modeling was very special and characteristic in history of purple clay teapots.

* Round cover and three legs teapot, Modem time, Pei Shimin. The shape originate from the shape of bronze wares, the body similar to the sphere, wide and big mouth, the rim of cover was square shape, saved the original style of bronze wares. Straight flow-mouth, circle handle, three cylinder feet holding the body. The whole shape was simple and unsophisticated, clean, vigorous and clear.
